VisualsA Hat in Time is an absolute MASTERPIECE of visual design, and I do not say this lightly. Somebody aimed to entertain when they wrote this game, and it succeeded. Nothing beats an angry Scottish bird-thing yelling at me to stop blowing up his train, or a jazzy penguin with an afro calling me darling and saying he's gonna make me the star of the show. This is compounded by the truly amazing voice actors for each role. The dialogue is always entertaining, and at its peak it's excellent. I cannot think of any point in my adventure that I wished for a better motivation to keep playing.

This leads to crazy scenarios like attempting to overthrow the Mafia, signing a contract with a large shadowy man to fight the aforementioned giant sentient toilet, or being the star actor in a war between two movie directors for the Annual Bird Movie Award. Hat Girl has lost her ship’s fuel source, Time Pieces, and needs to get them back. StoryJust like the gameplay, the story is a deceptively simple front that quickly spirals into delightful madness within an hour of starting the game.

The default hat’s effect is also to point to the next objective, a discreet way to make sure players never stay lost for long if they wander off-course. The simplicity of finding the right hat for the job hides the complex possibilities that arise because of such a simple premise. As the game progresses and you collect more pieces of yarn scattered around the worlds, you’ll fill out your hat collection more and thus unlock more of the worlds in an organic and exploration-rewarding experience. Hat Girl also has her arsenal of hats to assist her in these endeavors, with effects ranging from a simple sprint to stopping time itself. Jumping and dashing across rooftops, treetops, and other obstacles isn't difficult, but is still engaging all the same. Hat Girl handles very well in the air, with a double jump and dash combination allowing for surprisingly technical movement just like the games it was clearly inspired from. It really feels like the objective of the developers was to make each and every level different from the others, and they truly succeeded.Ī Hat in Time is an absolute joy to run around in, and I found myself having a fun time from start to finish. Perhaps you need to be stealthy and avoid getting caught. Maybe you need to solve a murder mystery, or fight a gigantic sentient toilet. Just like Sunshine, the objective of each area isn’t just to run up to the Time Piece and grab it.

The entire world is a real place to parkour around in to get to your objectives, not just a linear series of disconnected platforms and rocks like Crash Bandicoot. It has the hub style of Galaxy, but the level style of Sunshine.

The best way to describe how the game handles itself would be as a hybridization of beloved Mario games. GameplayA Hat in Time initially presents itself as a platformer, but it's more than just that.
